Sri Kanyakumari Gurukula Ashram
Organization background

Since 1952, Sri Kanyakumari Gurukula Ashram (SKGA) has been running several orphanages near Kanyakumari, India. Children reside in cottages in different campuses in small groups of 20 to 25 children in each cottage, with a housemother and a cook living full time with the children in each cottage. The children attend local schools near their cottages, and are transported by school buses owned by the ashram. There are 120 children distributed among 3 campuses (i) Newland campus houses 17 boys in the age group 5 to 20 (ii) Alamelupuram campus for boys (iii) Sitharamapuram campus (5 cottages) for girls of all ages and boys aged less than 10 years.

The organization also conducts day care programs (creches) for children below 5 years of age from the local villages. A mid-day meal is provided to the children as part of the program. The ashram also has a small dairy of cows, and a farm where fruits are cultivated.

Project background

The organization runs on donations, and is also aided by the Indian govt. The funds it receives for child sponsorship covers only 2/3 of the actual incurred cost (Rs 3000/child), so they are looking for additional funding for running the orphanages.
