Organization background
The Staten Island Giving Circle (SIGC), an all-volunteer organization,
combats food deprivation by
supporting underserved children, senior citizens,
veterans & the homeless while creating community
partnerships with other Staten Island-based organizations.
Project background
In 2018, SIGC began their Weekend Backpack program at P.S. 74, Staten Island,
to assist
hundreds of children who
were struggling with food scarcity on weekends, holidays,
snow days and vacations when the school cafeterias were closed
and they could not access meals at schools.
The school principal & parent coordinator identify at-risk children
and fill backpacks with items such as beans, rice, pasta, sauce &
cereal to be taken home on Friday and returned on Monday.
Due to the program's success, SIGC is expanding the program to other schools.
