Sri Ramakrishna Math
Organization background

Ramakrishna Math & Mission are twin organizations which form the core of a worldwide spiritual movement, to promote harmony between the East and the West; the ancient and the modern; spiritual fulfillment; all-round development of human faculties; social equality and peace for humanity and harmony of religions without any distinctions of creed, caste, race or nationality.

They follow the spiritual teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, his preeminent disciple. See here. Although Ramakrishna Math and Mission are legally and financially separated, they are connected in several other ways. Together, they have 190 branch centres all over India and in different parts of the world.

Swami Ramakrishnananda under the guidance of Swami Vivekananda. established a branch of Ramakrishna Math in Chennai, and started a school to be run by the Math in 1906 in the Mint area of North Madras. Subsequently, a Girls school was started in 1962 to predominantly cater to the underprivileged sections of society. Many of the school students are first generation girls going to school from their family.

Project background

School management of the Girls school observed that several students come to school without breakfast which affected their learning capacity and health — some children actually fainted from hunger. As a result, they began serving breakfast to all 250 students before school began. The school also supplements government-supplied midday meals with extra components like vegetables, Dal, Soyabin, oil, etc.
The school also runs free after-school tuition classes for students who need extra coaching, and provides them with an evening snack. The school also provides uniforms, support for school fees, free dental and health checkup, sanitary napkins etc.
Also due to COVID-19, many families of school children have taken a financial hit, requiring additional assistance in paying school fees.
