Organization background

Established in 1969, Pronto provides direct services for urgent, basic needs through their food warehouse/pantry; thrift center; and furniture warehouse.

As part of their Food as Medicine program, they run a Client-Choice food pantry; summer youth wellness garden program; weekend backpack food program; health and nutrition campaigns; Weekend Backpack program and provide social and nutritional services for seniors. They also run free citizenship education classes and legal workshops; ESL classes; provide free weekly immunizations for uninsured children; and provide mentoring and development training for unemployed youth and adults.

Project background

There has been a significant increase in individual and household emergency food requests and services at Pronto due to the most recent wave of immigration to New York State. Pronto’s Food as Medicine program helps tackle community and individual problems related to food insecurity.
