Port Washington Resource Center
- Location : Port Washington, NY
- Community Served: Children
- Focus: Education programs
Organization background
PRC is a non-profit parent cooperative dedicated to providing a wide range of
affordable educational and social opportunities to the community's families.
Port Washington is an affluent town on the North Shore of Long Island.
However it has a significant low-income population, including many
Latin American immigrant families who are educationally disadvantaged and
for whom English is a second language.
Children from these families, have little or no
access to school-readiness programs and lack the language, learning and
social skills needed to succeed in kindergarten. For many children whose
families speak English as a second language, building English language
skills is critical to their success.
Each year there are approximately 100 children and their families
enrolled in the Outreach Program which operates two 17-week semesters each year.
Project background
PRC's Outreach Program tries to help these disadvantaged families develop their
educational and social skills in order to succeed.
The Outreach Program is composed of four parts:
- Stepping Stones Class
-- offered only to Outreach at-risk children and parents.
The program
provides early childhood educational experiences
(learning school rules and routines, teacher-led reading, singing,
gym, art or cooking classes)
for low-income families with
children ages 0-4.
- Stepping Stones Summer Field Trips
-- a continuation of the
Stepping Stones Class for the summer months.
PRC provides educational field trips for Outreach children and their families,
that are ordinarily out of their
reach due to economic hardship and lack of transportation.
- Scholarship Fund
-- gives at-risk Outreach children the opportunity to
participate in all of PRC's classes and programs,
including Stepping Stones classes at no cost or at a reduced cost
depending on income and family size.
- English as a Second Language Class (for parents)
-- teaches the Outreach parents to speak conversational English.
