One Billion Literates Foundation
- Location : Bangalore, Karnataka, India
- Community Served: Women and children
- Focus: Social Assistance (skills training and education)
Organization background
The One Billion Literates Foundation (OBLF) was founded in 2010
to create better futures for underprivileged children and women
living in rural communities outside Bangalore. Their focus
areas are increasing access to primary education; running public
health programs; providing vocational training and running
rehabilitation projects.
OBLF works with Jupiter 360 Foundation in the US (J360) to raise
funds for their programs in India.
Project Background
Because of the lack of high-quality education, particularly English
language programs, and poor-quality teacher training in government
schools, a significant number of rural students struggle with
English language skills. Since English is the language of instruction
at many educational institutions, particularly higher education
institutions, students who lack proficiency in English face difficulties
learning other subjects such as science, math and social studies.
OBLF’s multi-pronged approach includes upskilling semi-educated
underprivileged women in rural areas outside Karnataka.
They are trained and then employed as community teachers to teach
English and technological literacy programs at
government schools where OBLF operates.
GKF contributions to OBLF
- 2023,2024: Funding for training community teachers, who can provide education to children in rural schools.
