Literacy Partners, New York
Organization background

Literacy Partners was established nearly 50 years ago to address the large number of adults in New York who could not read, write, or speak English at the 8th grade level. They recruited volunteers from New York’s educated population and organized free tutoring sessions in the public libraries and other community locations. Today their mission remains the same, but they focus on the needs of low-income and immigrant parents of young children. By concentrating on low-literate and limited-English proficient parents, and boosting their literacy and language skills, they have an immediate impact on their wellbeing and income-earning potential, and also create the conditions for success for the next generation, given that parental literacy skills are a major driver of school readiness and academic success of young children. They run four programs:

Project background

This project expands on LP's first offering, Adult literacy tutoring, by creating a workshop series for the parents of children struggling to read (especially those with dyslexia). The workshop series will meet parent's immediate needs for information and assistance in guiding their children's academic development and addressing their learning differences to better support their literacy development. Further, if the participating parents wish to improve their literacy skills beyond the workshop, they will also be offered a free spot in the regular Adult literacy tutoring program.
