Long Island Cares - the Harry Chapin Food Bank
Organization background

Long Island Cares Inc. was established in 1980 by Grammy award-winning songwriter and social activist Harry Chapin to address food insecurity and tackle the root causes of hunger in the region.

Their core programs include kids, veterans and general programs. As part of their kids program, they provide meals to children in need during summer break; they deliver meals and snacks to children in schools and to afterschool programs; and they run a mobile pantry and breakfast food truck. They also run a food program for veterans and food drives for the general public.

Project background

The Breakfast Mobile Pantry Food Truck partners with network providers and community providers to provide nutritious and shelf-stable food and supplies on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) from 9:30-11:30. Primary beneficiaries are kids and their families. The distribution is taken care of by other donors, and only food costs need to be covered.
