- Focus: Education (Residential School)
Organization background
Jyoti Development Trust (JDT)
operates the Disha Seema Centre School (DSCS), a
boarding school that hosts over 310 children from kindergarten to
grade 12
on the IIT Kharagpur campus.
With the support of the IIT community,
the school's main aim is to
provide an environment that encourages children from surrounding
tribal areas to attend school.
In addition to providing an education in a safe
and supportive environment, JDT also runs programs to
develop life and entrepreneurial skills and
motivates the privileged youth of the surrounding community to
participate in and support JDT's mission.
Project background
Children from kindergarten through grade 8 attend school onsite at
DSCS however children from grades 9-12 have to leave the premises to
attend local government schools. The parents of these children are
uncomfortable having their children attend offsite schools so they
are hesitant to send them to reside at DSCS.
JDT wants parents to continue sending their children to high school
so they are expanding their facilities to include upto 500 students,
a library, more classrooms & residential rooms, laboratories and staff rooms.
