Institute for Helping the Disabled
- Location : Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India
- Community Served: Disabled Children
- Focus: Social Assistance
Organization background
Since 1995, The Institute for Helping the Disabled (IHD) in Bhubaneshwar
has been providing free services
for individuals between the ages of 3 and 20 who have multiple disabilities.
They currently support 73 such individuals, mostly from very low income backgrounds.
IHD runs a Center staffed by
educators,
physiotherapists, occupational therapists, opthamologists and
other service providers for children who have a myriad of speech,
physical and developmental delays.
Their assessement service
has, to date, helped nearly 300 individuals, and provided them
with remedial treatment such as teaching them to walk with crutches,
teaching them Braille etc.
They also provide occupational therapy to enable the disabled to achieve
some semblance of independence.
They also provide at-home services to educate parents on how to create a
nurturing environment for their disabled children.
They also run an early intervention program.
Project background
Currently, a large number of children cannot come to the Centre.
In order to reach those children, IHD will create an outreach program
that encompasses a team of doctors, rehabilitation professionals
such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists & special education
providers to visit the children at their homes to assess and guide
their families. The plan is to do at least 500 visits per year.
