India Home
Organization background

Established in 2007, India Home is an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable South Asian elders facing social isolation and those who have limited access to culturally appropriate services in New York City. They run five centers across Queens, New York.

They offer meals, cognitive exercises, guest talks by professionals on health, legal & financial planning issues, nutrition education, physical exercise, creative aging activities like writing poetry, singing and painting, cultural group dances like Garba and Bhangra, group singing, discussion groups, case management, community mental health programs and advocacy.

Project background

The South Asian senior immigrant community faces a myriad of challenges such as language & communication barriers; limited access to healthcare services; social isolation & loneliness; elder abuse & exploitation, only to name a few. Addressing their needs requires culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate approaches that promote social inclusion.

India Home wants to redesign their office space to create a 'Home away from Home' for South Asian seniors that will host a Library, case management space and a Dementia Day program, while providing access to technology and mental health counseling, to meet their cultural, social, emotional, and healthcare needs.
