Gandhigram Trust
Organization background

Gandhigram Trust is a social service organization involved in holistic development of people, since 1947, inspired by Gandhiji's message 'Success attends where truth reigns'. Its goal is the enhancement of the socio—economic status of village communities through interventions in health, education, social welfare, livelihood and other services. Health interventions include running a large rural hospital. Education interventions include running two primary schools and a rural college. Livelihood interventions include application of rural technologies in Khadi and Village Industries, herbal processing, soap making, promoting rural artisans, steel and wooden furniture making, etc. In addition to such skill development activities, Gandhigram also runs programs to promote community involvement, and advocates for communities with government authorities.

Project background

In addition to running a Tamil-medium primary school with government support, Gandhigram has also started an English medium nursery and primary school (Kindergarten to Grade 5) to address the needs of the children from surrounding villages. The goal of the school is to provide affordable, holistic, Montessori-based public education to encourage independent & innovative thinking in children. Children are taught in English; participate in nature activities; are taught music & dance and provided with free library books. The Dr. Soundram Vidyalaya school has around 150 students and does not receive government funding.
