Organization background
Formed in 1890, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL),
a private not-for-profit Lab has been focusing on
biomedical research and education.
It has hosted 8 Nobel Prize Winners since the time
it started.
CSHL's research arm has approximately 600 scientists, students and technicians in 50 labs working on:
- Neurosciences - study of cognition, brain connections, and specific areas of the brain
- Quantitative biology - a multi-disciplinary area which
borrows from biology to develop computer science, and applies computer science
methods to understand biology
- Plant biology - focused on genomics
- Cancer research
- Genomics
CSHL‘s education arm:
- Hosts an annual molecular biology meeting for professionals attended by scientists from around the globe
- Runs short-term technical courses which introduce professionals to new technologies
- Runs an academic publishing house
- Runs programs for
middle and high school students and teachers during summer (1-week summer camp)
and throughout the year (classes and labs 1-2 times a month)
- Runs an intense summer program for undergrads -
around 30 courses are offered each lasting 2-3 weeks
- Runs a graduate school
Project background
The Graduate school
enrols only 10 students every year globally and its goal is
is to provide students with a PhD in approximately 4-5 years,
much quicker than the average PhD program.
The student has access to 2 mentors, is provided
with full financial & office support
with the intent of accelerating the graduation process.
