- Location : India
- Community Served: Rural children
- Focus: Social Assistance (protection from child labor and education)
Organization background
Child Relief and You (CRY) is an organization that focuses on improving the plight of
children in rural India. CRY works with several
Indian grassroots organizations and
tries to bring about lasting change by
engaging with local community (villagers, local government),
informing them about child labor laws, and
showcasing the benefits of child education to bring about change.
CRY also advocates and raises funds from international donors for
these grassroots organizations.
Project background
CRY has partnered with an organization called
Rural Workers Development Society (RWDS) in Tamil Nadu.
RWDS works with the Palmyra community (these workers tap Palmyra trees for their sap)
to reduce child labor and increase accees to education for their children.
Child labor is pervasive as middlemen come to the villages
during the summer to recruit vulnerable children.
Through RWDS's focused intervention, they have managed to re-enroll school
dropouts and reduce the percentage of dropouts by organizing local
collectives which provide tutoring assistance and encourage children to stay in
school.
