Brooklyn Book Bodega
Organization background

Since 2019, Brooklyn Book Bodega (BBB), has been working to put books into the hands of underprivileged children, aged 0-18, in Brooklyn. They curate and collect books from publishers, book stores and book donations and then make them available to the local community through book donation events. Their main programs include providing free books; hosting community events to distribute books and raise awareness; providing literacy materials & activities for families, and driving community engagement and building partnerships.

Project background

The areas of Brownsville, East New York, and Sunset Park have low social and economic determinants - communities are low income; there are higher-than average crime rates and school performance is poor. BBB believes that the educational disparities can be addressed by developing a love for reading in youth, and that this can be facilitated by getting books into the hands of children. They do this by providing books to community members, organizations, and educators through book distribution and events.
