Organization background

American Friends of Helpage India (AFHI) is the US Subsidiary of Helpage India (Helpage). Since 1978, Helpage India has been running several programs for abandoned and disadvantaged seniors across twenty six states in India. They currently run seven retirement homes and provide free healthcare such as cataract surgeries; physiotherapy; cancer, palliative & HIV/AIDS care; the provision of disability aids and treatment for Alzheimers. They run a Support a Gran program which provides for the basic & financial needs of elderly and advocate for elder rights. They also run livelihood & income generation programs and disaster relief interventions.

Project background

The Tamaraikulam Elders Village is HelpAge's first retirement village that was built exclusively for the elderly victims of the 2004 tsunami. Currently, the village houses one hundred residents and consists of a residential home, hospital, kitchen, dining hall and a multipurpose room.
